What is GDPR?

Introduced in 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the EU’s data protection framework (after Britain left the EU in late 2020, the regulation has become part of UK law).

GDPR was created to change how businesses and organisations handle our data. For those organisations who breach the rules, there’s a risk of large fines and serious reputational damage.

The UK’s ICO collected more than £39.7 million worth of fines from businesses in 2020.  And breaching the regulations can result in a fine of £17.5 million or 4% of annual global turnover (whichever is greater).

Despite this, more than half of UK businesses are not fully GDPR compliant.

GDPR seeks to do three things:

Modernise data protection law for the internet age

Give people more control over their personal data

‘Harmonise’ data laws throughout Europe to allow the safe transfer of data across borders

To help you stay on the right side of data protection rules, we’ve created a simple guide to GDPR compliance. Simply fill in the form below to download your copy.
